Probabilistic modeling of crop-yield loss risk under drought: a spatial showcase for sub-Saharan Africa

چکیده

Abstract Assessing the risk of yield loss in African drought-affected regions is key to identify feasible solutions for stable crop production. Recent studies have demonstrated that Copula-based probabilistic methods are well suited such assessment owing reasonably inferring important properties terms exceedance probability and joint dependence different characterization. However, insufficient attention has been given quantifying determining contribution climatic factors. This study applies Copula theory describe between drought anomalies rainfed maize, millet, sorghum crops sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The environmental policy integrated climate model, calibrated with Food Agriculture Organization country-level data, was used simulate yields across SSA (1980–2012). results showed severity due had a higher magnitude than itself. Sensitivity analysis factors contributing high-temperature stresses all amount precipitation during vegetation grain filling main driver loss, effect temperature stronger maize millet. demonstrate added value drought-impact assessment. For future studies, we recommend looking into influencing as individual/concurrent extremes.

Non-physician Clinicians – A Gain for Physicians’ Working in Sub-Saharan Africa; Comment on “Non-physician Clinicians in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Evolving Role of Physicians”

The changing demands on the health sectors in low- and middle-income countries especially sub-Saharan African countries continue to challenge efforts to address critical shortages of the health workforce. Addressing these challenges have led to the evolution of “non-physician clinicians” (NPCs), that assume some physician roles and thus mitigate the continuing shortage of doctors in these count...

A New Generation of Physicians in Sub-Saharan Africa?; Comment on “Non-physician Clinicians in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Evolving Role of Physicians”

This commentary follows up on an editorial by Eyal and colleagues in which these authors discuss the implications of the emergence of non-physician clinicians (NPCs) on the health labour market for the education of medical doctors. We generally agree with those authors and we want to stress the importance of clarifying the terminology to describe these practitioners and of defining more formall...

Experiences in sub-Saharan Africa with GM crop risk communication: outcome of a workshop.

In tackling agricultural challenges, policy-makers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have increasingly considered genetically modified (GM) crops as a potential tool to increase productivity and to improve product quality. Yet, as elsewhere in the world, the adoption of GM crops in SSA has been marked by controversy, encompassing not only the potential risks to animal and human health, and to the env...

Sources of variation in under-5 mortality across sub-Saharan Africa: a spatial analysis.

BACKGROUND Detailed spatial understanding of levels and trends in under-5 mortality is needed to improve the targeting of interventions to the areas of highest need, and to understand the sources of variation in mortality. To improve this understanding, we analysed local-level information on child mortality across sub-Saharan Africa between 1980-2010. METHODS We used data from 82 Demographic ...
